Will your 5th graders be able to use knowledge of converting measurements and interpreting data to escape the mad scientist’s lab? In this engaging activity, students work through puzzles in an automated Google Form (no e-mail addresses required) to open locked doors and make their escape. Encourage student engagement in interpreting line plots (CC.5.MD.B.2) and converting among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (CC.5.MD.A.1) in this fun digital cooperative learning activity.

Designed for fifth grade common core measurement and data standards, this activity is great for enrichment, review, or just for fun. Use it to challenge advanced fourth grade students, or as review for sixth grade. This escape room is very easy to implement. With only one page to print, prep couldn’t be much simpler. Escape rooms make great math centers and encourage the integration technology into math class.

In order to complete the challenges in this activity, students must be able to:

• Convert between metric measurements when given the conversion rates (grams to kilograms; meters to centimeters; etc)
• Convert between measurements in the U.S. customary system when given conversion rates (quarts to gallons; inches to yards; ounces to pound; etc)
• Use knowledge of fractions and decimals appropriate for fifth graders to solve multi-step word problems involving conversion between units.
• Interpret data in a line plot.

FAQ

• Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
• How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
• Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
