Description
Eight puzzles stand between students and a secure safe house in this 5th grade multiplying fractions escape room. First, students use computation, models, reasoning, and real-world problems to complete the spy-themed mission.
5th Grade Fraction Skills
Students practice the following skills:
- Multiplying fractions by whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers
- Solving real-world fraction multiplication word problems
- Finding the area of rectangles with fractional side lengths
- Recognizing fraction multiplication area models
- Interpreting multiplication as scaling
- Writing products in simplest form
Together, the puzzles support work with 5.NF.B.4, 5.NF.B.5, and 5.NF.B.6. Therefore, the activity fits best after students have learned the concepts and are ready to apply them across several problem types.

The printable escape room comes in color and black-and-white versions and includes the mission, eight puzzles, and a mission-accomplished page. For example, teachers can run the full escape room or use individual puzzles for task cards, math stations, small-group practice, or exit tickets.
Meanwhile, the digital escape room runs through Google Forms™ and is automated, no prep, and self-checking. Students do not need Google Classroom™, Gmail™, or email accounts. However, an optional copy link is included for schools that require the form to originate within their own Google system.
