The Decimal Deceiver is on the loose, and the Mathematical Security Agency needs your 5th graders’ help! Students must use decimal place value, rounding, powers of 10, and decimal operations to solve the clues and catch the mathematical criminal.
This digital escape room runs in Google Forms. It is no prep, automated, and self-checking, and students do not need Google accounts. The answer key also includes hints you can share when a student or group needs support.
Decimal skills students will practice
- Recognizing that a digit represents 10 times the value of the same digit one place to its right and one-tenth of its value one place to its left
- Writing decimals through the hundredths place in standard and expanded form
- Multiplying a decimal through the hundredths place by a one-digit whole number
- Subtracting decimals through the hundredths place to calculate change
- Multiplying decimals by powers of 10
- Comparing decimals through the hundredths place with <, >, and =
- Rounding numbers containing decimals to the thousandths place
Two options for differentiation
Both options use many of the same puzzles. Option B adds another puzzle and a more challenging final task, making it useful for students who are ready for extra challenge. Choose the shorter option when class time is limited or the extended option for enrichment.
Flexible classroom use
Students can complete the activity independently or in small groups. It works for unit review, extra practice, early finishers, homework, math tutoring, homeschool lessons, or a collaborative classroom challenge. Most students finish in under 45 minutes, although allowing up to 60 minutes gives groups time to discuss their reasoning.
All information is included in the Google Form, so students do not need to search the web. Please confirm that your school or district allows Google Forms. An option to create your own copy is included for schools that require forms to originate within their system.
