This math activity focuses on calculating the volume of rectangular prisms in a fun & engaging way. Can your fifth graders use their measurement and data knowledge to escape the cubic corridor? This digital escape room is a great way to review 5th grade standards related to volume as students race to solve the four puzzles in this digital escape room. Students will solve ciphers by finding volume in unit cubes; use the formula for volume in word problems to unlock treasure chests; unlock doors decomposing three-dimensional shapes into rectangular prisms and finding the volume; and more!

This activity is easy to implement. There are no clues to hide, and no answers to check; a Google Form™ automates the whole process! Simply scan a QR code or click a link to get started. This activity will work on tablets, computers, or even phones. Students and teachers are not required to enter e-mail addresses, or use Google Drive™ or Google Classroom™. There is, however, an option for experienced Google Forms™ users to create a copy of the form in order to view students’ results or edit the form.

In order to complete the puzzles in this escape room, students must be able to:

• Use the formula V = l x w x h to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms with whole number side lengths
• Solve multi-step word problems relating to volume
• Recognize volume as additive
• Measure volume by counting unit cubes
• Divide a four digit number by a two digit number
• Multiply a whole number by a decimal number
• Solve simple substitution ciphers (helper page provided)

Digital breakouts are a great way to encourage collaboration. While this activity can be completed by students individually, groups of 2-4 work the best. What supplies/materials do students need to complete this digital escape room?

• A device on which to access the form (computer, tablet, etc)
• Internet access
• Scratch paper/pencils
• Calculators can be used at the teacher’s discretion. If you are pressed for time, allowing the use of calculators will help students complete the tasks more quickly.
• Printing the Helper Page and Success Signs from the PDF is optional.

FAQ

• Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
• How long will this take? Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
• Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
• Can this be used for distance learning? Yes! The PDF includes directions to help you implement this for distance learning. This is an online activity, so students will need an internet connection. It can be used in a virtual academy for one class or for remote learning.
• Can I use this for tutoring? Yes! Math tutors love using digital escape rooms to get their students more engaged with math topics.
• Will this activity work in a homeschool setting? Absolutely. Online breakouts are a great change of pace to spice up regular math lessons and worksheets.
