Description
This 6th grade one-step equations escape room gives students focused pre-algebra practice through a humorous school mission. A brain rot virus is spreading through the building. Students must solve six connected puzzles and find the cure before everyone becomes a meme-obsessed zombie.
One-step equation skills
First, students use inverse operations to solve equations in the forms x + p = q, x – p = q, px = q, and x/p = q. The problems use non-negative numbers. Most include whole numbers, while a few include positive decimals.
Next, students also match a word problem with a useful equation. In addition, they review decimal operations and multi-digit computation. Each clue requires accurate math, careful reading, and a checked solution.
Middle school math with a current theme
The storyline uses school-appropriate Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang. However, the math remains the main task. The theme adds context while students explain strategies, compare answers, and work toward a shared goal.
For example, use the activity for back to school team building, a pre-algebra unit, math centers, or end of year review. Students may work alone, with a partner, or in a small group.
Print and digital versions
Meanwhile, the printable escape room includes color and black-and-white pages. Only five activity pages are required. A brain rot glossary is also included, so students can follow the jokes without extra research.
