Description

Students use order of operations to recover a stolen microchip in this 5th grade spy mission. Five connected puzzles ask them to find a meeting location, determine a passphrase, open a briefcase, and decode secret messages while evaluating expressions accurately.

Math skills students will practice

  • Evaluating whole-number expressions with parentheses and brackets
  • Applying the correct order of operations when grouping symbols are not present
  • Reading carefully and using results to solve codes and mission puzzles

The activity aligns with 5.OA.A.1. All expressions use whole numbers; exponents and negative integers are not included. The puzzles are intentionally challenging and work best after students have learned the underlying skill.

Choose print or digital

The printable version comes in color and black and white and includes four student sheets containing five puzzles. It is low prep and designed to be easy to implement with partners or small groups.

The digital version requires no printing, has no clues to hide, and is fully self-checking. Google Forms automates the breakout, but students do not need Google Classroom or email accounts. They can work on a computer, tablet, or phone with internet access.
