Description
When every pumpkin in town disappears, 2nd graders follow the clues and use place-value reasoning to recover them. The fall storyline keeps students reading carefully and discussing their ideas while the puzzles stay focused on meaningful 2nd grade math.
Math skills students will practice
- Building and interpreting three-digit numbers with base-ten blocks
- Comparing three-digit numbers using >, <, and =
- Reading numbers to 1,000 in standard, expanded, and word form
- Regrouping 10 tens as 1 hundred
- Using place-value understanding for addition within 100 without regrouping
- Skip counting within 1,000 by fives
- Reading clues and following multi-step directions
The activity supports key 2.NBT skills and is best used after students have learned the underlying place-value concepts.
Simple digital setup
The escape room is automated through Google Forms and checks answers as students progress. Teachers print one case-file page per group; it includes the backstory, QR code, and tools for working through the puzzles. No other clues need to be hidden, and students do not need Google or email accounts.
