A Month of January Math Challenges at Luna Nova
This 4th Grade January Math Spiral Review Escape Room turns midyear math practice into a month-long lunar adventure. Students complete 24 themed puzzles as they train for duty at the Luna Nova Research Station on the Moon.
Both printable and digital Google Slides™ versions are included. Each challenge is a separate escape-room-style math puzzle, so teachers can use one each day or select individual skills as needed.
Short Challenges That Fit Into the School Day
The resource includes 20 regular math challenges and four bonus challenges. Most tasks take approximately 5–15 minutes and work well for morning work, math centers, bell ringers, early finishers, partner work, small groups, homework, enrichment, or spiral review.
Students may need to decode secret messages, use ciphers, follow mathematical clues, complete number mazes, solve logic puzzles, identify mystery numbers, find hidden access codes, and repair equipment at the lunar research station.

- Multi-digit addition and subtraction
- Place value, number forms, comparison, and rounding
- Factors, multiples, factor pairs, and prime and composite numbers
- Equivalent fractions and comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators
- Decomposing fractions and adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators
- Measurement conversions and number patterns
The resource was designed with January fourth-grade rigor in mind. It can also be used later in the year for test prep, enrichment, extra practice, or ongoing spiral review.
A Wide Variety of Puzzle Types
Students encounter logic grids, process-of-elimination puzzles, sorting tasks, number mazes, mystery-number challenges, symbol equations, matching grids, coded messages, and alphabet, Pigpen, Morse code, and Atbash ciphers. The variety keeps practice fresh and encourages productive struggle, reasoning, and mathematical discussion.
