Can your students use their knowledge of performing operations with decimals, long division and place value to solve the clever Gingerbread Man’s clues and escape the bakery? In this fun review of several fifth grade Numbers and Operations in Base Ten standards, students follow an automated Google Form to complete a digital escape room. The form automates the whole process; students can only progress through the puzzles if the correct answer is entered. There are no clues to print, sort, or hide; the Google Form does it for you! This makes it easy to implement on the teacher and engaging for students as they race to escape!

Breakout games are a great way to get students excited about math and keep them engaged before the holidays. Encourage cooperative learning and critical thinking skills to solve math-based logic puzzles. This is one of or more challenging escape rooms that we have, requiring students to use critical thinking and logic to solve some of the puzzles. If you are using this math activity for distance learning, you may want to set up the kids in pairs or small groups remotely.

In order to complete the puzzles in this digital escape room, students must be able to:

• Complete division problems with a two-digit divisor, three-digit dividend, and whole number quotient.
• Solve multi-step word problems.
• Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimal numbers
• Identify prime numbers
• Understand CC standard 5.NBT.A.1: “Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.”
• Understand CC standard 5.NBT.A.2: “Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.”
• Solve logic puzzles (challenging!)

This product has been updated to include additional distance learning instructions for those teaching in a remote/virtual learning environment. The TpT digital tool also allows the “Helper” pages of the PDF to be sent to students digitally, making this a completely paperless option!

FAQ

• Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
• How long will this take? Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Also, you can consider allowing students to make this a calculator active activity if you are concerned about time.
• Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
• Do I have to hide clues? No! There are no clues to hide. Simply give the students a QR code to scan or a link to click, and everything is automated from there!
