Description
This 5th grade Valentine’s Day math escape room gives students a lively way to review several essential skills. Learners race to brew a love potion by solving standards-based puzzles with decimals, fractions, long division, and order of operations. The activity works especially well for a February math center, class party, test review, or seasonal enrichment.
A no-prep digital math challenge
First, students solve a multi-step word problem with decimal multiplication and addition to find a key. Next, they order decimals to the thousandths place so they can add potion ingredients correctly. Then, they subtract fractions with unlike denominators to balance the scales. Students also divide four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers and evaluate expressions with parentheses. Finally, they unscramble words to locate the tool that completes the potion.
The story keeps the different skills connected. Meanwhile, the puzzles provide meaningful practice without feeling like a traditional worksheet. Partners and small groups can discuss strategies together, although students may also complete the escape room independently.

How the digital escape room works
An internet-connected device and browser are required. The entire activity runs through an automated Google Form™, but students and teachers do not need Google™ accounts. When students submit an incorrect response, the form provides a hint. Therefore, they must solve each puzzle successfully before moving forward.
