  • Combine like terms in expressions with variables. Example 2x + 9 + 4x -4 = 6x + 5
  • Recognize the parts of an equation and write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. Example: 5 less than the product of the coefficient of x and 3.
  • Recognize and form equivalent expressions by using the distributive property to factor or distribute.
  • Evaluate expressions when given the value of the variable. Example: 1/3(5y) when y=6.
  • Be able to calculate whole number powers of fractions.
  • Follow the order of operations with whole number powers, parentheses, and the four operations.
