Description

Double-digit addition takes a twist when the tricky turkeys lock your students in a barn so that they can escape! These Thanksgiving escape rooms are designed for 2nd grade math standard 2.NBT.B.5 and include versions for adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping. The puzzles in the two escape rooms are the same, however the problems in one version require regrouping, while the other version has no regrouping. This allows teachers to differentiate or use the activities at different points in the year.

These online breakouts can be used as whole class activities, in small groups, or in pairs. The escape rooms are fully automated by Google Forms™ with optional printable puzzles to accompany the online version (there is not a stand-alone printable version of this product). The optional printable pages make the escape room even more engaging as students can spin a cipher disk, line up two pages to reveal a clue, and they also allow students to draw models, write equations, and show their work. Google accounts are not required for teachers or students to be able to use this product! Anybody with an internet connection, device, and browser can use these turkey-themed escape rooms.

Skills needed to complete this escape room:

• Be able to add two 2-digit numbers presented horizontally or vertically with regrouping in one version, without regrouping in the other version
• Understand the concept of tens and ones and use this knowledge to add without regrouping
• Solve simple substitution ciphers
• Carefully read or listen to clues

FAQ

• Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. The escape room is automated by a Google Form™, but does not require the teacher or students to have Google™ accounts.
• How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-45 minutes. Requiring students to show their work will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles.
• Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
