Description
Keep your 4th graders engaged before the holiday break with “Revenge of the Gingerbread Man” digital escape room. This breakout activity is based on fourth grade math standards and is a great way to review before winter holidays! This activity requires students to be able to access a Google Form™ (no e-mail address required). The form automates the entire process, making this collaborative activity easy to implement. This product includes directions & tips for distance learning! This is a challenging activity and is best done in small groups. If you are looking for a simpler, shorter online breakout to use around the holidays, check out Escape the Snow Globe!
When the Gingerbread Man sneaks out of the bakery and locks your students inside, they will need the following skills to complete his puzzles:
- Multiply two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers
- Interpret remainders in division problems (two-digit dividend, single digit divisor)
- Solve multi-step word problems involving multiple operations
- Complete logic puzzles (a printable page is provided to help students organize their work for these)
- Understand the terms prime, factors, multiples, sum, product
Escape rooms are great to use as math centers and encourage cooperative learning. This activity is best done with partners or small groups. It makes a great review of skills or can be used for enrichment, for early finishers, or just for fun.
To make the experiment even better, read a version or two of the Gingerbread Man to your class before starting the escape room. Serve up some gingerbread cookies for a treat and snap a photo with one of the provided success signs when you finish!

FAQ
- Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
- How long will this take? Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Also, you can consider allowing students to make this a calculator active activity if you are concerned about time.
- Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
- Do I have to hide clues? No! There are no clues to hide. Simply give the students a QR code to scan or a link to click, and everything is automated from there!
