Turn multi-digit addition and subtraction practice into an exciting escape room adventure!

In this 4th grade math digital escape room, students solve standards-based addition and subtraction problems while completing puzzles and decoding challenges. Instead of working through another traditional worksheet, students use their math skills and critical thinking to escape the library.

This activity provides engaging practice with multi-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and aligns with Common Core Standard 4.NBT.B.4.

Math Skills Practiced

Students will:

• Add multi-digit whole numbers with regrouping
• Add numbers with up to seven digits
• Subtract multi-digit whole numbers with regrouping
• Subtract numbers with up to five digits
• Regroup and subtract across zeros
• Solve multi-digit addition and subtraction word problems
• Apply the standard algorithm and other appropriate strategies

No-Prep and Self-Checking

The escape room is fully automated using Google Forms™. Students enter their answers directly into the form and must solve each challenge correctly before continuing.

There are no clue cards to cut out, locks to prepare, or materials to hide around the classroom. Simply provide students with the activity link and scratch paper, and they are ready to begin.

Students do not need Gmail™ or Google™ accounts. Anyone with an internet-connected computer, tablet, or phone can complete the activity in a web browser.

An optional link is also included for teachers who need to save a copy of the Google Form™ within their school’s Google Drive™ system.

How Long Does It Take?

Most students complete the activity in approximately 30–45 minutes. Students who are highly confident with multi-digit addition and subtraction may finish more quickly, while other students may need up to 60 minutes.

Students will need an internet-connected device and access to Google Forms™. Please confirm that your school or district does not block Google Forms™ before purchasing.
