Description
A mischievous Candy Corn Man gives first graders five math puzzles to solve. This 1st grade Halloween math escape room combines addition, subtraction, word problems, and place value in one playful mystery.
Because the resource includes two differentiated levels, you can choose the challenge that fits your students. Use the black-and-white printable escape room, the self-checking digital Google Forms™ version, or a combination of both. Although the candy corn theme works well for Halloween, the story never names the holiday, so you can also use it throughout fall.
Two Differentiated Levels
Version A: Addition Focus
- Addition word problems and facts within 10
- Adding 10 and a single-digit number
- Representing two-digit numbers with tens and ones
- A final addition problem within 10
Version B: Addition and Subtraction
- Addition and subtraction word problems and facts within 20
- Missing-addend problems
- Representing two-digit numbers with tens and ones
- A final addition problem within 20
The place-value puzzles stay the same in both versions. However, Version B adds subtraction, missing addends, and larger totals. The resource aligns with CCSS 1.OA.A.1 and 1.NBT.B.2.
Print and Digital Options
The printable format includes two complete sets of low-prep student pages. Meanwhile, Google Forms™ automates the digital versions and gives immediate feedback. Students do not need email addresses, Google Classroom™, or Google accounts. For younger learners, you can also lead the activity as a whole-class challenge.
