Turn 3-digit addition and subtraction practice into an escape room adventure!

In this 3rd grade math digital escape room, students solve standards-based addition and subtraction problems as they work through clever puzzles and decoding challenges. Each correct answer helps students move closer to escaping the library.

This activity provides engaging practice with 3-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and is aligned with Common Core Standards 3.NBT.A.2 and 2.NBT.B.7.

Math Skills Practiced

Students will:

• Add two three-digit numbers
• Add within 1,000 using regrouping
• Subtract numbers with up to three digits
• Subtract within 1,000 using regrouping
• Regroup and subtract across zeros
• Solve three-digit addition and subtraction word problems
• Apply place-value strategies or the standard algorithm
• Check computations carefully to solve puzzles

No-Prep and Self-Checking

The escape room is fully automated using Google Forms™. Students enter their answers directly into the activity and must solve each challenge correctly before moving forward.

There are no clue cards to cut apart, locks to prepare, or materials to hide around the classroom. Simply provide students with the activity link and the optional recording page or scratch paper.

Students do not need Gmail™ or Google™ accounts to complete the escape room. Any student with an internet-connected computer, tablet, or phone can access the activity through a web browser.

An optional link is also provided for teachers whose schools require Google Forms™ to originate within their district’s Google Drive™ system.

This activity is designed primarily for 3rd grade students who are learning or reviewing addition and subtraction within 1,000.

How Long Does It Take?

Most students complete the escape room in approximately 45 minutes. Students with a strong understanding of the skills may finish in 20–30 minutes, while other students may need up to 60 minutes.
