Can your 2nd graders use their knowledge of double digit addition with regrouping to escape the barn? This digital escape room is perfect for Thanksgiving time! In the Case of the Tricky Turkeys, second graders race to add two-digit numbers and solve fun & engaging puzzles. Students will decode secret messages, open locks by adding two digit numbers, find a key, and more. This escape room is also available for double-digit addition without regrouping to help you differentiate.
This escape room is easy to implement and is fully automated by a Google Form™. Anyone with an internet connection, browser, and device can complete this math activity. Google™ accounts are not required. This activity can be used as a whole class, in small groups, or by students individually. It is recommended that teachers do a trial run of the breakout to assess the difficulty level (including the amount of reading) before deciding how to best assign this to their students. To make the product even more interactive, printable versions of the clues and cipher disk are provided. These are meant to accompany the online escape room and not to be used as stand-alone activities. This activity is great to use at a math center, or during your class Thanksgiving party!

FAQ
- Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. The escape room is automated by a Google Form™, but does not require the teacher or students to have Google™ accounts.
- How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-45 minutes. Requiring students to show their work will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles.
- Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
Escape rooms are a great way to encourage collaboration, practice skills, or review before tests.
