Description

This fractions as division escape room gives 5th grade students meaningful practice with 5.NF.B.3. Students interpret fractions as division and solve fraction-based word problems. Nine spy-themed puzzles lead them through a mission to rescue an undercover agent.

Students write quotients as proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. They also recognize equivalent fractions written in different forms. The activity combines clear skill practice with teamwork, productive struggle, and an engaging storyline.

Math skills practiced

  • Interpret division as a fraction: a ÷ b = a/b
  • Write quotients as proper fractions
  • Write quotients as improper fractions and mixed numbers
  • Solve real-world division problems with fractional answers
  • Recognize equivalent fractions in simplest form

Students do not need to simplify every answer. However, one maze shows answers in simplest form. Therefore, students must recognize equivalent fractions to complete that puzzle.
