Description

If you’re looking for a way to keep your 6th graders engaged before Thanksgiving break, then this Thanksgiving themed, standards based sixth grade math escape room is for you! This is an easy to implement activity that is available in both print and digital versions (the digital version requires students to be able to access to the internet to use a Google Form™. No e-mail addresses required).

Even if you aren’t having a Thanksgiving class party in middle school, this worksheet alternative will keep kids engaged and having fun while practicing and reviewing important math standards before the holiday break. The online version of this breakout is also easy to implement for distance learning. Because some of the puzzles are quite challenging, setting up online group meetings is recommended to allow students to collaborate as they work through the challenges.

In order to complete the five puzzles, students must be able to:

  • Round numbers to the nearest tenth and whole number (this is a review of a fifth grade standard, but is presented in a challenging “guess my number” puzzle)
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimal numbers and compare their values
  • Perform multi-digit division
  • Divide fractions and mixed numbers
  • Create equivalent ratios and solve ratio word problems
  • Use order of operations to evaluate expressions which include parentheses, exponents, and the four operations
  • Solve multi-step word problems
  • Solve logic puzzles

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! There are tools in the PDF to help you successfully implement this in a virtual learning setting. Because some of the puzzles in this escape room are challenging, I would recommend setting up Google Meets™ or Zoom™ groups for students to collaborate on solutions.

Escape Rooms, also known as breakout games, are a great way to review important math skills, provide enrichment, and encourage collaboration among students. Groups of 2-4 are recommended for this activity, although it can be completed by individual students.
