Description

This digital breakout offers two options; one is a quick/basic, and one more challenging.

Set the fifth grade math worksheets aside for the day and try this exciting digital escape room involving plotting points and interpreting graphs in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane. For this low prep activity, students race to catch a flight and fill in the information on their “plane tickets” for each student and print the provided coordinate plane. From there, they can access a Google Form™ that automates the whole escape room process!

NEW DISTANCE LEARNING TOOLS ADDED on 5/12/2020. A Google Slides™ version of the airline ticket and a digital coordinate plane which students can use to plot points has been added to the end of the PDF. Please note that students will need their own Google Drives™ to use these tools. The regular escape room does not require students to have their own Google Drive™.

THIS ESCAPE ROOM IS FASTER TO COMPLETE THAN MOST OF OUR OTHERS! Many students may finish in 20 minutes or less, others take 30-45 minutes to complete this task. Therefore, the product has been updated to include a “Challenge Version.” This version includes a logic puzzle for students to work through.

This breakout style lesson was specifically designed for 5th grade Common Core math standards 5.G.A.1 and 5.G.A.2. This geometry themed escape room can also be used as enrichment for fourth graders or review for sixth graders.

The backstory: Your students have been selected for a free flight to a mystery destination on Coordinate Plane Airways! The only catch is they have to solve puzzles to figure out where they are going, what there gate number will be, and more. They’ll have to hurry so they won’t miss their flights. Will they be able to solve the puzzles to escape the airport on time?

This digital escape room includes:

  • Two versions of the digital escape! The “Basic Version” is great for a quick review. The “Challenge Version” takes a bit longer to complete, but includes a logic puzzle and two of the other puzzles were made more difficult
  • “Plane Ticket” with a QR code taking kids to the Google Form (a url to the Google Form is also provided if your students are unable to use QR codes)
  • Quick start guide and more detailed directions
  • Answer key with teacher tips
  • Success signs to snap a photo with
  • Coordinate plane page to print for students to graph and show their work

To complete the puzzles in this escape room, students need to be able to:

  • Identify the origin of a coordinate plane
  • Plot points in the first quadrant of a coordinate plane
  • Find given points in the first quadrant
  • Graph shapes (example, given that the upper right hand corner of the square is located at (9,10) and each side of the square is 3 units long, find the other points to form the square)
  • Interpret word problems using the first quadrant of the coordinate plane

This digital escape room can be used by individual students for enrichment, extra practice, or homework. It is also a great cooperative learning tool for small groups of students (2-4 recommended). Use it for reviewing graphing and geometry standards, or even for early finishers! Tutors and homeschool parents also love using this activity to spice up their lessons and reinforce concepts of plotting points in the first quadrant.
